A cancer diagnosis changes what safe touch looks like — and generic massage isn't built for that. Oncology massage is a specialized approach that adapts pressure, positioning, and technique to a client's diagnosis, treatment stage, surgical history, and current side effects. At Brownstone Station Wellness Center, serving Hummelstown, Hershey, Palmyra, and the greater Harrisburg area, our oncology-trained therapist provides cancer-safe massage for clients who are in active treatment, recovering from cancer-related surgery (including post-mastectomy massage), or navigating long-term survivorship — including many clients currently receiving care at Penn State Cancer Institute at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and other regional cancer centers.

Why oncology training matters
Standard massage training doesn't cover cancer-specific safety: which areas to avoid or modify near surgical sites and ports, how to adjust pressure around fragile skin or radiation-treated tissue, when certain treatments affect bleeding or clotting risk, or how positioning needs to change for comfort and safety. Oncology-trained therapists work from that knowledge rather than guessing — which is why it's worth asking any massage therapist about their specific oncology training before booking, whether at Brownstone or elsewhere.

What to expect in a session
Every oncology massage session starts with a thorough intake — your diagnosis, treatment history, surgical sites, current symptoms, medications, and anything your care team has flagged. From there, pressure, positioning, and technique are adapted specifically to you. Sessions are typically gentler than standard relaxation massage, and always prioritize safety over depth of pressure.

Oncology massage at Brownstone may also incorporate lymphatic-informed techniques for clients managing swelling or at risk for lymphedema — for clients whose primary need is lymphatic drainage rather than oncology massage specifically, visit our Manual Lymphatic Drainage page to learn more about that service and book directly.
A note on medical clearance
Depending on where you are in treatment, we may ask for clearance from your oncologist or surgeon before your first session — this is standard practice in oncology massage and helps us build the safest possible plan for your body.
